ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's volleyball triumphed in its home opener on Tuesday night, notching its first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over non-conference opponent Penn College in the Adler Arena.
The Lady Lions (1-4) cruised to a 25-16, 25-17, 25-15 win over Penn College (0-4).
Kelsey Bristol (Troy, PA/Troy) posted a match-high 12 kills for Penn State Altoona while swinging at a .450 clip, and she added seven digs. Kaitlin Cassaday (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) produced seven kills on a .333 attack percentage, and she also finished with seven digs.
Lauren Moran (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) had a match-high 26 assists, and she also totaled a team-best nine digs. Nicole Kiser (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) tallied eight digs, and Alyson Onder (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) had seven digs.
Penn State Altoona closed out the first set by reeling off the final three points in a row, getting two kills from Cassaday and another from Emily Bryan (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro).
The Lady Lions got off to a slow start in the second set, spotting the Wildcats a 6-2 lead to start the game. But tied 13-13, Penn State Altoona began to pull away when it scored four straight points, with three of those coming courtesy of Bristol kills. The Lady Lions went on to score the last five points of the set, including back-to-back service aces from Eden Taddei (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg).
Penn State Altoona held a comfortable lead throughout the third set, building a 20-9 lead at one point. Bryan's ace ended the set, sealing the home team's win.
Women's volleyball returns to action tomorrow evening, Wednesday, September 5, when it hits the road to play non-conference opponent Frostburg State University at 7:00 p.m.
