Lions Bested by Saints in Sunday Twinbill
DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the College of St. Scholastica on Sunday at Northeast Regional Park, as the Lions continued their week competing in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
The Saints (5-3) won game one 9-3, then topped the Lions (1-5) 13-5 in game two.
Game One: St. Scholastica 9, Penn State Altoona 3
The Lion bats were quieted in game one of the doubleheader, as the Saints allowed just three hits. St. Scholastica capitalized on a few scoring opportunities and finished with a six-run decision over Penn State Altoona.
Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) had a double and a run scored, Brian Chelli (West Hartford, CT/Hall) had a hit and a run batted in, and Owen Dombrosky (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) had a pinch-hit single.
Michael Labisi (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) took the loss for Penn State Altoona on the mound after going three innings and striking out four batters. Ryan Jackson (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) added three innings in relief.
St. Scholastica took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Damian Tamayo Vera.
The Lions knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the third. Ethan Bojko (Chester Springs, PA/Downingtown East) drew a leadoff walk and later came home on Chelli's two-out RBI single up the middle.
But the Saints jumped right back in front in the next half-inning, when Vera's two-run single to center made it 3-1. St. Scholastica increased its lead to 5-1 in the fourth, getting a Luke Krull RBI single and another sac fly off the bat of Vera. A solo homer from by Tyler Mielcarek in the fifth extended the Saints' lead to 6-1.
Penn State Altoona got a run in the top of the sixth, when Rauch doubled to left and David Wignot (Charlotte, NC/Lake Norman Charter) drove him in with a sac fly to center.
The Saints got three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, using a Vera RBI double and sac flies from Finley Spicer and Ben Schefers to make it 9-2. The Lions added a run to their total in the top of the seventh when Nate Osteen (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) scored on an error, but Penn State Altoona was stuck with a six-run loss.
Game Two: St. Scholastica 13, Penn State Altoona 5
The Saints seized a commanding 11-run lead through their first two times at the plate, and St. Scholastica rode a comfortable margin through the seventh for an eight-run win over Penn State Altoona.
Judd Dasso (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) led the Lion bats with a 2-for-3 performance with a double, triple, two RBI, and one run scored. Osteen and Caden Force (Indiana, PA/Indiana) recorded one RBI apiece.
Andrew Crouse (Mercersburg, PA/James Buchanan) made the start at pitcher and took the loss after going 1 1/3 innings. Ryan Schellhase (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg), Ryan McConnell (Altoona, PA/Altoona), Jarek Szaflarski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim), Preston Farabaugh (Ebensburg, PA/Penn Cambria), and Carter Piercey (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) all saw action in relief.
St. Scholastica jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Vera's RBI single and Spicer's RBI triple plated the first two runs, and an RBI single from Tommy Crupi followed before Carson Jesberger scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. The Saints tacked seven more runs on to their total in the second to establish an 11-0 advantage.
Penn State Altoona scored two in the bottom half of the second on Dasso's two-run triple to right center, and the teams traded runs in the fourth, including an RBI single to left center from Osteen. In the fifth, Kaleb Jockel (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) doubled and came around to score on a wild pitch, and Force drove in a run with his base hit up the middle.
St. Scholastica added a run in the seventh, and the Saints defeated the Lions by eight runs.
Penn State Altoona baseball heads into its first off-day of the week tomorrow, before returning to action with a single, 9-inning game against Thomas College on Tuesday, March 10. First pitch of that contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park's main field.
