AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team wrapped up its weeklong trip in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday, when the Lions went up against Fredonia State University and Calvin University in a pair of games at Lake Myrtle Park.
Penn State Altoona (5-7) fought past Fredonia for a 5-4 victory in game one, then lost 11-6 to Calvin in its second and final game of the day.
Game One: Penn State Altoona 5, Fredonia State 4
The Lions overcame a pair of one-run deficits to Fredonia (1-4) in their first game of the day, battling back each time and ultimately winning on a walk-off, two-run homer off the bat of Judd Dasso (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood).
Dasso went 2-for-4 with his first collegiate home run, a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) hit 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, and Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) took the ball for game one and finished with a no-decision, tossing five innings, yielding three runs, and striking out four batters. Michael Tedrick (Plum, PA/Plum) finished the game in relief and picked up the victory, improving to 3-0 this season. Across four innings, Tedrick allowed just three hits, one run, and one walk while recording three strikeouts.
Fredonia drew first blood in the top of the second inning, when Andrew Tucker led off with a home run to left to give the Blue Devils the lead.
Penn State Altoona jumped ahead in the bottom of the third. After a leadoff walk from Jarek Szaflarski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim), Dasso doubled to left center to tie the game at 1-1. One batter later, Rauch's RBI double to center put the Lions on top, and an Ingold RBI base hit to left center later in the frame made it 3-1.
The Blue Devils closed the gap to one in the top of the fifth, when Tucker's two-out RBI double to left made it 3-2. Fredonia knotted the score at 3-3 in the sixth on Zachary Richards' RBI single, and a Tucker Schwab run-scoring base hit in the eighth gave the Devils a 4-3 advantage.
But the Lions rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth. Kaleb Jockel (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) drew a pinch-hit walk to start the frame, and Szaflarski's sacrifice bunt moved him over to second in the next at-bat. After that, Dasso blasted a two-run shot over the left-field fence to deliver a 5-4, walk-off win for Penn State Altoona.
Game Two: Calvin 11, Penn State Altoona 6
Calvin (8-7) worked its way out to a 7-1 lead early in the game, but Penn State Altoona stayed within striking distance by getting back to within three, 7-4. The Lions tried to keep chipping away over the next several innings, but the Knights did enough to put the game out of reach late and prevail by five.
Owen Dombrosky (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) went 3-for-4 for Penn State Altoona with an RBI and a run scored, and Brian Chelli (West Hartford, CT/Hall) was 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBI, two runs scored, two stolen bases, and a walk.

Caden Force (Indiana, PA/Indiana) made the start at pitcher and took the loss, going three innings and striking out a pair of batters along the way. Cole Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) tossed five innings in relief, allowing only one earned run and recording 11 strikeouts.
Calvin put four on the board in the bottom of the first to stake out an early lead. A throwing error during a double steal allowed Ryan Tschirhart to score from third, and Jack Vargo's three-run homer to left later in the inning made it 4-0.
Penn State Altoona picked up a run in the top of the third inning on a two-out RBI single to center from Dombrosky.
But the Knights added to their lead in the bottom half of the third, when Christian Stevens drove in three runs with his double to left, increasing the Calvin advantage to 7-1.
Penn State Altoona responded with a three-run hit of its own in the top of the fourth, when the Lions made Calvin pay for a pair of errors. Nate Osteen (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) started the inning with a walk, and Colón and Szaflarski each reached base on errors by the Knights. With two outs, Chelli's triple down the right field line drove all three in and brought the Lions back to within three, 7-4.
The score differential remained three runs until the bottom of the sixth, when Calvin tacked two more runs on to its total. Gabe Bonemer's RBI double made it 8-4, and he later scored on a throwing error to give the Knights a five-run lead.
Penn State Altoona got a run back in the next half-inning, when Chelli led off the top of the seventh with a base hit to right, moved up to second on Jockel's sac bunt, stole third base, and scored on a throwing error during the steal attempt to make it 9-5.
The Knights increased their lead to 11-5 in the bottom of the eighth, when an error during a fielder's choice allowed Bonemer to score from third and an RBI single to center from Thomas Paplawsky gave Calvin a six-run advantage.
The Lions got one more run in the top of the ninth, when Dombrosky led off the frame by reaching on a hit by pitch and later scored on a throwing error to make it 11-6.
