Lions Sweep Mounties in Saturday Doubleheader
CRESSON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team closed this week's three-game series with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College on Saturday afternoon at Calandra-Smith Field, where the Lions overpowered the Mounties for a pair of wins.
Penn State Altoona (11-12, 2-5 AMCC) fended off Mount Aloysius (8-18, 2-5 AMCC) for an 11-10 victory in game one, then beat the Mounties 13-9 in the nightcap.
Game One: Penn State Altoona 11, Mount Aloysius 10
The Lions ran up a 10-1 lead through four-and-a-half innings, only to see the Mounties come all the way back and tie the score at 10-10 in the sixth. But Penn State Altoona scored a run in the top of the seventh and held on for its first conference victory of the season.
Brian Chelli (West Hartford, CT/Hall) went 2-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season, five RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base. Cole Strick (Windber, PA/Windber) finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored, two RBI, a walk, and a stolen base.
Judd Dasso (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) hit 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base, and Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
On the mound, Andrew Crouse (Mercersburg, PA/James Buchanan) made the start and finished with a no-decision after pitching 4 2/3 innings, yielding six runs, and striking out four batters along the way. Michael Tedrick (Plum, PA/Plum) registered his fourth win of the season in relief action, pitching 1 1/3 innings and allowing no earned runs. Jarek Szaflarski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) tossed a scoreless seventh for his second save of the spring.
Penn State Altoona went up 1-0 in the top of the first on an RBI single from Rauch, then tacked four more runs on to its total in the second, when Strick's two-run single to left center, Chelli's RBI base hit to left center, and Owen Dombrosky's (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) run-scoring single to left made it 5-0.
The Lions boosted their lead to 9-0 in the third, thanks to Dasso's RBI single into right and Chelli's three-run homer to right. Mount Aloysius got on the board when Trent Dickson led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run, but Penn State Altoona got that run back in the top of the fifth when Chelli's groundout allowed Szaflarski to score from third, making it 10-1.
The Mounties got back into the game in the bottom of the fifth, when they got five runs across to close the gap to 10-6. Coy Martino and Dickson scored on Lions' errors, Tyler Alexander hit a solo home run, and Michael Todd and Andrew Scalia each drove in runs with hits to bring Mount Aloysius back to within four.
The Mounties proceeded to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Logan Quade scored on a fielding error before a three-run homer from Anthony Maseto brought the score even, 10-10.
Penn State Altoona capitalized on an extra-base hit early in the seventh inning to jump right back in front. Strick led off the frame with a triple to right, and he scored when Szaflarski followed with a sacrifice fly to right, putting the Lions back up, 11-10.
Szaflarski and the Lions put Mount Aloysius down in order in the bottom of the seventh, getting a lineout, groundout, and flyout to ice Penn State Altoona's first AMCC win of 2026.
Game Two: Penn State Altoona 13, Mount Aloysius 9
The teams traded runs across the first five innings of game two, with Mount Aloysius holding a slim 7-6 advantage midway through the contest. But Penn State Altoona took the lead with a three-run sixth, then pulled away late to hand the Mounties a four-run loss.
Strick had another strong showing at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored. Chelli launched his fifth home run of the year and finished 3-for-6 with two RBI, two stolen bases, and a run scored. Dasso was also 3-for-6 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored, and Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) went 2-for-4 with four RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Benjamin Ettien (Media, PA/Penncrest) finished 2-for-6 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Devin Colón (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) had a double, two runs scored, and two walks, and Rauch also had a double with two runs scored and an RBI.
Meanwhile, Lion pitchers combined to allow only five earned runs across nine frames. Eric Seick (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) got the start and took a no-decision after going 4 1/3 and yielding three earned. Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) pitched the next 1 2/3 in relief, allowing two earned runs and striking out a pair. Ryan Jackson (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) followed with 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, allowing no runs, striking out two, and registering his first collegiate win. Szaflarski pitched the final 1/3 inning to cap things off.
Penn State Altoona went up 1-0 in the top of the first. Dasso started the frame with a double, moved up to third on a flyout, and then scored on Rauch's groundout to shortstop.
Mount Aloysius countered with an RBI single from Maseto and an RBI double by Scalia in the bottom of the first, but Dasso's run-scoring single up the middle in the top of the second tied the score at 2-2.
The teams continued to exchange runs, with a Sidric Grove RBI base hit giving the Mounties a 3-2 in the bottom of the second and a Dombrosky RBI groundout to shortstop bringing Penn State Altoona even, 3-3.
A two-out error by the Lions in the bottom of the fourth allowed Mount Aloysius to retake the lead, as Cole Harkness came home on an infield throwing error.
Penn State Altoona responded quickly again, putting three runs on the board in the top of the fifth with two outs, as Strick's RBI single to right center and Ingold's two-run base hit to right center made it 6-4.
Mount Aloysius matched the Lions' offensive output in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs of their own to again work in front. Martino's hit to right center brought home a pair, and Grove's RBI hit to right gave the Mounties a 7-6 lead.
But Penn State Altoona leapfrogged ahead in the top of the sixth. With one out, Chelli homered down the right-field line to knot the score at 7-7, and two-out RBI doubles from Ettien and Strick later in the inning produced two more runs to set the Lions' lead at 9-7.
The Mounties battled back again in the bottom of the sixth, when a two-out, two-run single to left by Harkness erased Penn State Altoona's lead and evened the score at 9-9.
But the Lions reclaimed the lead for good in the top of the seventh, en route to outscoring the Mounties 4-0 over the remainder of the game. Chelli's RBI single up the middle in the seventh made it 10-9, and Ettien scored on an error in the top of the eighth to increase his team's lead to 11-9. Ingold also delivered a two-run single up the middle to extend Penn State Altoona's lead to 13-9 through seven-and-a-half.
The Lions put up zeros in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to seal the deal and clinch their first conference doubleheader sweep of the season.
Penn State Altoona baseball returns to action on Wednesday, April 8, when the Lions start their three-game series with AMCC opponent La Roche University. The teams face off in a single, 9-inning game in Pittsburgh at 3 p.m. on Wednesday before the series continues in Altoona on Saturday, April 11.
