Baseball Beats Redhawks 11-1

PITTSBURGH – The Penn State Altoona baseball team opened this week's three-game series against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe La Roche University with a lopsided win on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Redhawks 11-1 at John Arnold Sr. Memorial Field.

The Lions (12-12, 3-5 AMCC) sprang out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second and never looked back, outscoring La Roche (6-17, 1-7 AMCC) 6-1 the rest of the way to activate the 10-run rule in the eighth inning. Penn State Altoona limited the Redhawks to just one run on four hits.

Ryan Schellhase (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg) tossed a complete game to record his third victory of the season on the mound. The freshman right-hander scattered four hits, allowed three walks, and held La Roche to one run while striking out seven batters.

Jarek Szaflarski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) went 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, and two walks. Kaleb Jockel (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) hit 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run scored, and one walk.

Judd Dasso (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI, two runs scored, and one walk. Devin Colón (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run.

After a scoreless first inning, Penn State Altoona jumped on La Roche in the top of the second by getting five runs across. Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) opened the scoring with an RBI double, before run-scoring groundouts to second by Colón and Jockel made it 3-0. Later, Dasso's RBI single and Brian Chelli's (West Hartford, CT/Hall) RBI double increased the Lions' lead to 5-0.

Penn State Altoona continued to add on in the middle stages of the game, as Dasso's two-run double in the fourth and Colón's RBI single in the fifth made it 8-0. In the sixth, Dasso and Szaflarski scored on an outfield error to boost the Lions' lead to double digits, 10-0.

La Roche got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to an Alex Perez solo home run to left.

But Penn State Altoona yielded no further damage, and the Lions eventually got that run back in the top of the eighth on Jockel's RBI single. After holding the Redhawks scoreless in the bottom half of the eighth, the Lions invoked the 10-run rule to end the game with an 11-1 victory, the team's third AMCC win of the season.

Penn State Altoona baseball resumes this week's series against AMCC opponent La Roche at home this Saturday, April 11, hosting the Redhawks for a pair of games at Stewart Athletic Field starting at 1 p.m. Before game one, the Lions will hold their Senior Day ceremony, which is slated to start at approximately 12:35 p.m.
