Baseball Bests Bobcats to Win Three-Game Series
GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team clinched a sweep of this week's three-game set with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg, as the Lions defeated the Bobcats in both ends of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
A well-rounded performance in game one of the doubleheader propelled Penn State Altoona (15-14, 6-6 AMCC) to an 11-2 win, and the Lions held on for a 12-11 victory in the nightcap to post a clean sweep of this week's three-game series with Pitt-Greensburg (8-19, 6-7 AMCC).
Game One: Penn State Altoona 11, Pitt-Greensburg 2
The Lions scored two in the first, then drove their lead up to 10 with an eight-run top of the fourth, as Penn State Altoona finished with a comfortable win in game one.
In the victory, senior outfielder Brian Chelli (West Hartford, CT/Hall) set a new Penn State Altoona baseball single-season record for stolen bases. Chelli swiped a bag in the fifth inning to reach 28 steals this year, passing former Lion standout Jimmy Baum's previous record total of 27 stolen bases from the 2010 season.
Aidan Donovan (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) also hit 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.
Devin Colón (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored, and Jarek Szaflarski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Judd Dasso (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) launched his third home run of the season and finished with two RBI and two runs scored.
On the mound, Andrew Crouse (Mercersburg, PA/James Buchanan) pitched a complete game to record his second win of the season. The right-hander went all seven innings and limited Pitt-Greensburg to just two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out five batters.
Dasso led off the game with a home run to left, and Ingold's two-out RBI single to right later in the top of the first made it 2-0. Penn State Altoona maintained its lead over the next three innings, holding the Bobcats scoreless and allowing just two base runners.
The Lions broke the game open in the top of the fourth. Colón's two-run single to right center doubled Penn State Altoona's lead, and he later scored on an infield error to make it 5-0. Jonathan Rauch's (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) two-run double to center preceded another infield error by Pitt-Greensburg that allowed Rauch to score in the next at-bat. The Lions added two more runs on an Ingold RBI double to right and a wild pitch that plated Donovan from third, increasing the advantage to 10-0.
Pitt-Greensburg got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run to left center by Josh Preston, but Penn State Altoona got that run back in the top of the fifth when Colón led off with a double and later scored on Dasso's groundout to shortstop.
The Bobcats picked up one more run in the bottom of the seventh, when Colin Solinski led off the frame with a home run to right. But Penn State Altoona allowed no further damage, and the Lions sealed a nine-run conference win.
Game Two: Penn State Altoona 12, Pitt-Greensburg 11
The Lions again worked their way out to a strong lead in game two, building a 9-2 advantage through four innings. However, Pitt-Greensburg chipped away at its deficit across the next several innings and made it a one-run game in the bottom of the ninth. But Penn State Altoona managed to preserve its lead and escape with the tight win.
Nine different Penn State Altoona batters finished with a multi-hit game.
Ingold went 3-for-6 with his fifth home run of the season, a double, three RBI, and three runs scored. Owen Dombrosky (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) also went 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Szaflarski was 3-for-4 with two RBI, a run, and a walk.

Michael Labisi (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) got the start on the mound for game two and finished with a no-decision, pitching 4 2/3 innings, yielding four earned runs, and striking out four. Ryan Jackson (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) tossed the next 1 1/3 innings and picked up the win, his second of the spring. Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) pitched two innings after that, and Szaflarski earned his fourth save of the season by pitching the last inning and holding the fort for the Lions.
Penn State Altoona scored a pair in the top of the first to nab the early lead. Dasso led off with a walk and later came home on an error, and Dombrosky's RBI single through the right side made it 2-0.
Pitt-Greensburg made it 2-1 in the bottom of the first on a Solinski RBI double to center, but Penn State Altoona expanded its lead with two more runs in the top of the second. Szaflarski's RBI single to left drove in one run, and Dasso hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Colón to score and make it 4-1.
The teams traded runs in the next two half-innings. In the bottom of the second, William Somers hit a sacrifice fly to right that brought the Bobcats to within two, 4-2. But Ingold's one-out solo homer to right in the top of the third put Penn State Altoona's lead back at three, 5-2.
The Lions pulled away a little in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs all with two outs. With two on, Dombrosky's RBI single up the middle brought home one run, and Ingold followed with a two-run double to left center. Ettien came next, hitting an RBI base hit into left to set Penn State Altoona's advantage at 9-2.
Penn State Altoona's seven-run lead stood until the bottom of the fifth, when Pitt-Greensburg edged closer with a pair of runs on RBI singles from Preston and Ethan Steinmetz.
The Lions made it 10-4 on Strick's two-out RBI double to right center in the top of the sixth, but the Bobcats tacked two more runs on to their total in the bottom half of the sixth. Somers came home on an error, and another Preston run-scoring base hit narrowed the visitors' lead to four, 10-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bobcats trimmed their deficit to three on a Somers RBI single, but Penn State Altoona upped its lead to 12-7 in the top of the eighth on back-to-back RBI singles from Szaflarski and Dasso.
Pitt-Greensburg made it 12-8 in the bottom of the eighth on a Colby Rearick sac fly to center, and the Bobcats made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Somers homered to right center to start the inning, and Solinski's RBI single to right made it a two-run difference. With two outs and the bases loaded, Rearick drew a walk to score another run that cut Penn State Altoona's lead to 12-11. But the Lions escaped the inning with a flyout to ice the victory.
Next up, Penn State Altoona baseball will resume its suspended game against La Roche University, which began on April 11, this Wednesday, April 22 at 3 p.m. The game will pick up in the top of the eighth inning with the score tied 6-6.
