Baseball Falls to Alfred State in Friday Doubleheader

ALFRED, N.Y. - The Penn State Altoona baseball team continued its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule away at Alfred State Friday afternoon, when the Lions lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Pioneers.

Alfred State (15-23, 9-6 AMCC) came back to win game one in extra innings by a score of 12-11, then dominated Penn State Altoona (16-16, 7-8 AMCC) by a 9-3 score in game two.

Game One: Alfred State 12, Penn State Altoona 11 (Final/8 innings)

The Lions ran up an 11-4 lead through four-and-a-half innings, only to see the Pioneers score seven unanswered runs to tie the game at 11. Alfred State then won the game in extra innings.

Cole Strick (Windber, PA/Windber) finished a perfect 2-for-2, having a double, sacrifice fly, two runs scored, and three RBI. Jarek Szaflarski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and three RBI.

Devin Colón (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) hit 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI.

On the mound, Andrew Crouse (Mercersburg, PA/James Buchanan) got the start and finished with a no-decision after pitching five innings, yielding six runs and nine hits, and striking out two batters. Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) pitched the final two innings, conceding six runs and five hits.

Penn State Altoona found themselves down 2-0 in the first inning following a home run from Alfred State's Zach Young. The Lions responded with RBI doubles from Strick and Colón, tying the score at two. The Lions took the lead after Szaflarski singled, allowing Colón to run home.

The Lions' bats were hot in the third inning, as they scored seven runs to take an eight-run lead. A single from Aidan Donovan (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) started things off with Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) scoring. A Strick single led to Owen Dombrosky (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) scoring. After a run scored via a wild pitch, a double down the left-field line from Szaflarski set up Colón and Strick for their second runs of the game. Szaflarski scored himself following a single from Judd Dasso (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood). Dasso scored the final run of the inning courtesy of Brian Chelli's (West Hartford, CT/Hall) double.

Alfred State reduced Penn State Altoona's lead to six runs in the bottom of the third inning. A run by Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) would be the final run the Lions scored in game one, as the Pioneers scored seven unanswered runs to force extra innings.

Alfred State's Jordan Hughes hit his second home run of the game in extra innings to hand Penn State Altoona a loss.

Game Two: Alfred State 9, Penn State Altoona 3

Penn State Altoona fell behind early in the second game before equalizing in the third inning. Unfortunately for the Lions, Alfred State responded, scoring seven runs to hand Penn State Altoona a six-run loss.

Rauch launched his 12th home run of the season and finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Benjamin Ettien (Media, PA/Penncrest) hit 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Ryan Schellhase (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg) took the mound for game two and took the loss after pitching five innings. Schellhase struck out five batters and conceded seven runs. Caden Force (Indiana, PA/Indiana) pitched one inning in relief, conceding two runs.

Like the first game, the Lions found themselves down early. The Lions halved the deficit in the third inning after Ingold and Rauch scored off an Ettien double.

A home run from Hughes gave Alfred State a five-run lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Pioneers would score two more runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to seven.

Rauch homered to left field in the seventh inning, but it did little to change the outcome, as Alfred State won both games of the doubleheader, 12-11 and 9-3.

Penn State Altoona baseball will return to action next Wednesday, April 29, in a three-game series against non-conference opponent Juniata College. The teams will face off in doubleheader in Huntingdon at 1 p.m. on Wednesday before the series concludes with a single, nine-inning game in Altoona the next day, Thursday, April 30.
