Late Runs Not Enough as Baseball Loses 15-5

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona baseball team took a break from their conference schedule Monday afternoon to compete against non-conference opponent Juniata College at Langdon Goodale Field, where they lost 15-5.

Juniata (12-26) dominated the game early, putting 15 runs on the board in the first three innings. Penn State Altoona (16-17) tried to make a comeback, putting five runs on the board, but it wouldn't be enough as the Eagles got a ten-run victory over the Lions.

Jarek Szaflarski (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) went 2-for-3 at the plate for Penn State Altoona, finishing with an RBI. Owen Dombrosky (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) also had a two-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Michael Tedrick (Plum, PA/Plum) started on the mound, went two innings, and took the loss. Daniel Ditterline (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) and Eric Seick (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) combined to pitch the last four innings in relief, with Ditterline striking out three batters.

Juniata exploded in the beginning of the game, scoring eight runs off six hits in the first two innings. Penn State Altoona got two on base in the second inning but could not bring them home.

After another scoreless frame by the Lions, the Eagles added to their lead by getting six hits and scoring seven runs in the bottom of the third.

The Lions started getting hits in the fourth inning, as Ingold, Cole Strick (Windber, PA/Windber), Devin Colón (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic), and Szaflarski all got singles. Szaflarski's single enabled Colón to reach second and Strick to run home. Colón stole third but would be left on base as the Lions conceded a third out.

Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) added another run for the Lions in the top of the fifth after errors by the Eagles.

The Lions' bats were at their best in the seventh inning with Rauch and Ingold hitting singles and Dombrosky hitting a double. Dombrosky's double led to Judd Dasso (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) scoring, while Ingold's single led to Rauch scoring. Dombrosky then ran home on a stolen base attempt to make the score 15-5 as the Lions went home with a 10-run loss.

The Lions will continue their three-game series against Juniata in a home doubleheader on Thursday, April 30, at 1 p.m.
