Lions Seize First Hite Cup
LIGONIER, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team won the Hite Cup for the first time in the five-year history of the event, as the Lions overtook non-conference opponent Westminster College 6-1 at Laurel Valley Golf Club on Saturday in the annual round of match play between the two schools.
Penn State Altoona won six out of the seven head-to-head matchups to handily defeat Westminster, which had won the Hite Cup in each of the four previous years.
Atop the Lions' lineup, Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) and Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) each won, 5&3. Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) posted a 6&4 decision over his opponent in the third spot, and Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) won 7&6 in the fourth lineup position.
Westminster notched its lone point of the day in the five spot, but Penn State Altoona ran the table the rest of the way, as Joey Sabol (State College, PA/State College) won 3&2 and Austin Duelley (Austin, TX/Lake Travis) had a 5&2 triumph.
Penn State Altoona men's golf returns to play next weekend with more split-squad action.
