Men’s Golf Starts DIII Preview, Allegheny Tournaments

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team returned to split-squad action on Sunday, when the Lions began competition in a pair of tournaments.

Penn State Altoona's 'A' team teed off the first round of the three-day NCAA Division III Fall Preview at Mission Resort + Club. The Lions shot 306 in Sunday's round on the Las Colinas course of the resort, finishing the day in a tie for 22nd place out of 24 schools.

The Lions' 'B' squad opened the two-day Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational, hosted by Allegheny College at The Country Club of Meadville. Penn State Altoona compiled a score of 320 to rank eighth out of 13 teams by the conclusion of Sunday's action.

NCAA Division III Preview, Day One

Penn State Altoona competed on the Las Colinas course in Sunday's round, one of the two courses at the Mission Resort + Club used in the tournament. The Lions compiled a team score of 306 on the par 71 course to tie for 22nd place.

Kenyon College finished the day atop the team leaderboard following round one with a score of 278, while Emory University held second place with 282.

Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) had Penn State Altoona's low round, firing a 1-over par 72 to finish the day in a tie for 26th place out of 120 individuals. Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) was tied for 49th place after shooting 3-over with a 74.

Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) completed the round in a tie for 107th place with matching scores of 80, and Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) scored an 86 for 119th place.

The second round of the three-day tournament is tomorrow, Monday, September 22, when Penn State Altoona's play will shift to the resort's El Campeon course.

Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational, Day One

Penn State Altoona's 'B' team finished Sunday's opening round of the Allegheny Invitational in eighth place after shooting 320 as a team on the par 72 Meadville course.

Carnegie Mellon University was in first at the end of Sunday's round, scoring 294 as a team. Host Allegheny was in second with 296, and Wittenberg University was in third place with 300.

Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) had the best score of the round for Penn State Altoona's 'B' team, after he finished 7-over par with a 79 to end the day in a tie for 32nd place out of 64 individuals. Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) and Arthur Franciosa Jr. (Purchase, NY/Harrison) both completed the round in a tie for 37th place, after each golfer shot 80.

Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Austin Duelley (Austin, TX/Lake Travis) were both tied for 41st place individually with matching scores of 81.

The second and final day of the Kuhn Memorial Invitational is tomorrow, Monday, September 22, with the start time for the day's action projected to be 9 a.m.
