Men’s Golf Concludes Sinking Valley Classic

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's golf was back in action Monday, when the Lions hosted the second and final day of their tournament, the Sinking Valley Collegiate Classic, on their home course at Sinking Valley Country Club.

Penn State Altoona's 'B' team finished as the top-placing squad for the Lions. The 'B' unit compiled a team score of 309 in Monday's round on the par 70 course, totaling 615 strokes across two days to take fifth place out of 20 squads.

Penn State Altoona's 'A' team shot 316 on Monday, finishing the tournament with 619 to come in sixth place. The Lions' 'C' team tied for 14th place on the leaderboard, shooting 316 on Monday and recording a combined score of 655.

Franklin & Marshall College won the tournament with a two-day score of 602. Bridgewater College earned runner-up status with 609, Mount Aloysius College placed third with 612, and Pitt-Greensburg came in fourth with 613.

For the Lions' 'A' team, Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) was the top finisher in the tournament, tying for seventh place out of 105 individuals with a two-day score of 152, including his 77 from Monday's round. Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) tied for 14th on the player leaderboard, scoring an 80 in round two and compiling a total score of 153.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) tied for 25th place, carding a 79 in round two to total 155 strokes. Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) scored an 80 Monday, finishing with a two-day score of 159 to tie for 43rd place. Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) tied for 60th individually with 165, including his 81 on Monday.

Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) tied for seventh place individually to lead the Penn State Altoona 'B' squad, shooting 77 on Monday to record a total score of 152. Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) shot 76 in day two, finishing the tournament in a tie for 14th place with a combined score of 153.

Austin Duelley (Austin, TX/Lake Travis) tied for 25th place, carding a 78 Monday and earning a two-round score of 155. Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) shot 80 in day two to compile a total score of 157, putting him in a tie for 34th place. Arthur Franciosa Jr. (Purchase, NY/Harrison) took a tie for 39th place, scoring 158 strokes in two rounds, including shooting a 78 on Monday.

For Penn State Altoona's 'C' team, Luke Repko (Cresson, PA/Bishop Carroll) had the Lions' overall low round of the day, firing a 75 in Monday's action and compiling a total score of 161 to tie for 51st place individually. Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) tied for 58th place with a total score of 164, including his 81 on Monday.

Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) tied for 65th place on the player leaderboard, shooting 82 in day two and earning a total score of 166. Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) got 75th place with a two-round score of 170, including shooting 78 on Monday. Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) tied for 84th, carding 90 on Monday and totaling 176 strokes for the tournament.

Roger Royer (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg Community) again competed for the Lions as an individual, finishing the tournament in 91st place with a two-day score of 179, including his 93 on Monday.

Next, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team will look to defend its conference title, as the Lions will compete in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships next Monday, October 13 and Tuesday, October 14 at Toftrees Golf Resort in State College. Penn State Altoona will be in search of its fifth consecutive AMCC championship and 10th overall in program history. A win would give the Lions their ninth-ever NCAA postseason berth in the spring.
