Men's Golf Takes Second in Pennsylvania Classic

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's golf team concluded its first tournament of the spring semester on Sunday, when it finished in second place out of 22 teams at the end of the second and final day of the Pennsylvania Classic at the Penn State Blue Course.  

The Lions improved on Saturday's score by 20 strokes, shooting 294 as a team in Sunday's round on the par 72 course. Penn State Altoona totaled 608 for the tournament to take second place on the team leaderboard.  

Washington & Jefferson College won the Classic with a two-day score of 601. Mount Aloysius College placed third with a score of 612.  

Additionally, Penn State Altoona won the Penn State Division III Challenge portion of the tournament, which pitted the participating Penn State Division III teams against each other. Penn State Altoona's two-round score of 608 ranked first, ahead of Penn State Harrisburg (630), Penn State Behrend (648), Penn State Berks (655), and Penn State Abington (657). 

Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) highlighted Sunday's action for Penn State Altoona's 'A' team by shooting on par in round two and totaling a score of 149 for the tournament to tie for fifth place individually.  

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) tied for 14th after carding a score of 74 on day two for a total of 152. Joey Sabol (State College, PA/State College) hit 76 strokes on day two, tallying a two-day score of 153 to tie for 19th individually. Nicholas Helsley (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) also finished Sunday's action on par for a total score of 154 to tie for 22nd place. 

Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) rounded out the Penn State Altoona 'A' team, tied for 50th place with a score of 159, including his score of 77 in today's action.  

Penn State Altoona's 'B' team tied for eighth place on the team leaderboard, shooting 305 on Sunday and finishing with a two-day score of 626.  

Nicky Riscica (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) had the 'B' squad's low in the round, shooting three-over-par in today's action, while tallying a score of 153 in two days of action to tie for 19th individually.  

Austin Duelley (Austin, TX/Lake Travis) ended in a tie for 24th, after he shot 77 in day two and finished with a combined score of 155. Arthur Franciosa Jr. (Purchase, NY/Harrison) totaled 161 shots in two days, including his score of 74 on Sunday, to tie for 63rdSean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) tied for 69th after tallying 162 shots, with 79 of those during Sunday's action. Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) tied for 74th after he carded 81 on Sunday and recorded a two-day score of 163. 

The Penn State Altoona 'C' team ended Saturday's round in 22nd place with a team score of 509.  

Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) shot 164, including 80 today, to tie for 76th. Roger Royer (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg Community) shot 171, including 77 today, to place 94th. Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) shot 174, including 89 today, to place 99th 

Penn State Altoona's one individual also concluded his weekend in Sunday's round. Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) tied for fifth place after shooting two-over-par in today's round for a two-day score of 149.  

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's golf will travel to Jacksonville, N.C. to compete in the 53rd Annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship. The three-day event, held from Friday, April 10, through Sunday, April 12, is hosted at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune at Paradise Point Golf Course. Tee times for each round are scheduled for 8:00 a.m.
