Men's Tennis Prevails Against Presidents, 4-3

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team resumed their spring schedule on Saturday, defeating non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson 4-3.  

Penn State Altoona (5-4) fell behind early when Washington & Jefferson (0-7) won two out of three in doubles. However, the Lions bounced back to win the match, prevailing in four of six singles matches, several of which went to third sets or tiebreak.  

Washington & Jefferson posted wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to get the first point of the match. Penn State Altoona salvaged a victory in No. 1 doubles, where the duo of Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) and Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) recorded a 6-3 win.  

Penn State Altoona rallied to win the day, thanks to a hard-fought performance in singles play. The Lions won four singles matches, including three that went to a third set or a tiebreak. 

Beard got a 6-0, 6-2 win in No. 1 singles. Ivan Bene (York, PA/Lancaster Country Day) came out on top in No. 2 singles with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. In No. 3 singles, Lopez won with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) decision against his opponent. Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) prevailed against his opponent in No. 5 singles, winning 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.
