Beard Repeats as AMCC Player of the Week
LATROBE, Pa. – For the second week in a row, Penn State Altoona senior Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) was chosen as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis, as the league office announced its weekly slate of awards on Monday afternoon.
Beard posted a 2-0 record in No. 1 singles matches and a 1-1 mark at No. 1 doubles for the Lions last week, as the Penn State Altoona men's tennis team faced conference foe Penn State Behrend and non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College.
In Penn State Altoona's 4-3 loss at Penn State Behrend on Friday, March 20, Beard pulled out a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 victory in his No. 1 singles match and suffered a 6-2 loss in No. 1 doubles. The next day, Saturday, March 21, the senior prevailed 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and 6-3 at No. 1 doubles in the Lions' 4-3 triumph at W&J.
This is Beard's fourth career AMCC Player of the Week recognition. The senior leads Penn State Altoona in singles wins this season, holding a 7-2 overall record that includes a perfect 3-0 mark within the AMCC. In doubles play, Beard is currently tied for the most wins on the squad, as he possesses a 5-4 overall doubles record and a 2-1 record in AMCC matches.
Penn State Altoona men's tennis is 5-4 overall as a team and 2-1 in the AMCC. The Lions' next matches are this Sunday, March 29, when the team hosts conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
