Lions Place Fifth in Sinking Valley Classic
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's golf team wrapped up its season-opening home tournament on Monday, as the Lions hosted the second and final day of their Sinking Valley Collegiate Classic at Sinking Valley Country Club.
Penn State Altoona shot 434 in Monday's round, a 24-stroke improvement over their first-round score yesterday. The Lions compiled a two-day score of 892 on the par 72 course to finish in fifth place out of five teams.
Saint Vincent College won the two-day event with a total score of 731, edging past second-place Allegheny College and its team score of 732. Juniata College placed third with 783, and Mount Aloysius College was fourth with 826. Carlow University competed as a group of four individuals.
Gabby Catalogna (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) was Penn State Altoona's top finisher in the tournament, coming in seventh place out of 27 total golfers. Catalogna shaved nine shots off of her Sunday score, firing 87 in Monday's round to total 183 across two days.
Alexis Peacock (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) placed 10th individually with a two-round score of 193, including her 95 on Monday which was a three-shot improvement from Sunday. Clarissa Long (Altoona, PA/Altoona) came in 22nd place with a combined score of 233, after she scored seven strokes better on Monday with a 113. Alyssa Franks (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) took 27th place with a two-round score of 283, including carding 139 on Monday for a five-shot improvement from her Sunday score.
Next up, Penn State Altoona women's golf will hit the road for the first time this season next Monday, September 15, when the Lions will compete in the Saint Vincent College Invitational at Latrobe Country Club. The round's start time is slated for 11 a.m.
