Men’s Wrestling Opens Schedule at ESU Open

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's wrestling team got its 2025-26 season underway on Sunday, when the Lions competed in the ESU Open at East Stroudsburg University's Koehler Fieldhouse.

Five Lions took to the mats in Sunday's tournament, with Tammar Reza (Montgomery, NJ/Montgomery) competing at 125, Evan Davis (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) wrestling at 133, Oliver Garcia (Bridgeport, CT/Great Oaks Charter) competing at 141, and Gonzalo Santana Hernandez (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) and Andrew Weaver (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) both wrestling at 174.

At 125, Reza received a bye in the first round of the bracket before facing off against Felician University's Marcus Lowery in the round of 32, where Reza lost 3-0 by fall. He went up against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Sam Culp in the consolation bracket and lost 17-1 by tech fall.

Davis' day began with a 3-0 loss by fall to Sacred Heart University's Anthony Clem in the first round of the 133 bracket. Dropping to the consolation bracket, Davis went down by tech fall, 18-1, to Union College's Salvatore Randazzo.

Garcia's first match of the 141 bracket came in the round of 16, after he got byes in the first two rounds. In his first match of the day, Garcia lost 13-0 by fall to East Stroudsburg's Joe Aldrich. After that, Garcia lost 3-0 by fall to Pitt-Johnstown's Trennen Smith in the consolation bracket.

Hernandez started off with a bye in the 174 bracket, then lost by fall, 7-0, to East Stroudsburg's John Bracken in the next round. After that, he faced Kean University's Devan Monahan in the round of 16 in the consolation bracket, where he lost 3-0 by fall.

Weaver had a bye in the first round at 174 before tallying a win in the next round, during which he won 6-1 by fall over Union's Vito Giannetta. Weaver followed that up with a 6-0 win by decision over Gavin Geleta to move to the quarterfinals of the bracket, where he took his first loss, 3-0 by fall, to USMAPS' Evan Roudebush. In the consolation round of eight, Weaver was handed a 3-0 loss by fall by Bloomsburg University's Hassin Maynes.

Next up, the Penn State Altoona men's wrestling team will compete in its first dual meet of the season this Friday, November 7, when the Lions will hit the road to face non-conference opponent Waynesburg University at 7 p.m.
