Lions Compete in AMCC Championship
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's wrestling team hit the road Saturday morning to compete in the AMCC Championships, hosted by Penn College at Bardo Gymnasium.
Jarren McCloskey (Lock Haven, PA/Sugar Valley Rural Charter), Gonzalo Santana Hernandez (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn), and Andrew Weaver (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) competed for the Lions, with McCloskey wrestling at 133, Hernandez at 165, and Weaver at 174.
McCloskey got a bye in the quarterfinals of the 133 bracket. In the semifinals, McCloskey faced Penn State Behrend's Amarfio Reynolds, getting pinned at 2:44 to move to the consolation bracket. In the consolation semifinals, McCloskey won via decision, 9-4, against Penn State Behrend's Logan Milligan to move on to the third-place match. In the third-place match, McCloskey lost via fall at 4:19 to Pitt Bradford's Mike Worsen to place fourth.
Hernandez's tournament started in the quarterfinals, where he faced Alfred State's Brandon DellaPia, getting pinned at 0:57 by DellaPia. In the consolation round one match, Hernandez lost via technical fall, 15-0, to Penn College's Logan Mickey.
Weaver's first match in the 174 bracket came in the quarterfinals, where he battled against Alfred State's George Racz. Weaver lost via major decision, 12-1, to Racz to move into the consolation bracket. In the consolation semifinals, Weaver defeated Penn State Behrend's Anthony Salvini by decision, 4-0. In the third-place match, Weaver rematched Racz, getting pinned at 2:52, to finish fourth.
The Lions complied 11 points during the championships to finish fifth.
Up next, the Penn State Altoona men's wrestling team will compete in the NCAA Region III tournament on Friday, February 27.
