Lions Compete in NCAA Region III Championships

EWING, N.J. - The Penn State Altoona men's wrestling team closed out the 2025-26 season competing in the NCAA Division III Regional 3 tournament, hosted by The College of New Jersey. 

Two Lions took to the mats in the tournament, with Gonzalo Santana Hernandez (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) wrestling at 165 and Andrew Weaver (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) wrestling at 174.   

At 165, Hernandez faced Misericordia University's Jacob Weaver in the championship round 1, where he lost 19-4 by technical fall. With the loss, Hernandez moved into the consolation rounds. Hernandez received a bye in consolation round 1 before facing United States Merchant Marine Academy's Viviano Guiterrez 17-0 by technical fall. The loss ended Hernandez's tournament.  

Weaver's tournament started in the championship round 1 of the 174 bracket. In championship round 1, Weaver faced Merchant Marine's Andrew Huesgen, losing to Huesgen by technical fall, 18-2, to move into the consolation rounds. Weaver recieved a bye in round 1 before facing Alvernia University's William Knapp in consolation round 2. Against Knapp, Weaver was pinned at 5:38. The loss ended Weaver's tournament.  

The Lions finished the tournament in 21st place.
