Women's Soccer Edges Past Bison for Win
ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team would come from behind to get the win today against Bethany College, winning 2-1 at Spring Run Stadium.
Penn State Altoona (2-0-1) would find their backs up against the wall early as Bethany College (0-2) would score 11 minutes in through a chipped goal from Brooke Fuleki.
The early setback would force the Lions to push forward, which they did, mustering five shots and three saves from Bethany goalkeeper Hope Fair. The Lions would keep probing throughout the half, finally getting their reward with just six seconds of the half remaining as freshman Kira Trexler (Martinsburg, PA/Central) would score her second goal of the season, powering the ball over Fair's outstretched hands.
In the second half, Bethany would apply pressure early on, firing off three shots in the opening six minutes of the half. Penn State Altoona would weather the pressure, with junior goalkeeper Mya Torres (Culpeper, VA/Culpeper County) making four saves and the defense making numerous blocks throughout the half to deny the Bison another goal.
Meanwhile, the Lions were getting some good looks at goal. Those good looks would turn into a goal as Trexler would cross the ball into the box, where it would eventually fall to sophomore Grace Turner (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island), who would smash the ball into the back of the net to give the Lions the lead in the 75th minute. The Lions would keep out the Bison for the rest of the game to win 2-1.
Trexler and Turner would both finish the game with two shots on goal, while Jordan Yaletsko (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Academy Charter), Emma Spanik (Blandberg, PA/Glendale), and Erin McCarrie (Blackwood, NJ/Paul VI) would all have one shot on goal. In goal, Torres would finish the game with five saves.
Penn State Altoona women's soccer travels to Washington, Pa. for their next game, September 7, where they will face Washington & Jefferson. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
