Lions Defeat Geneva 5-2 on Senior Day
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team celebrated senior Rachel Stricek (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions posted a 5-2 victory over visiting non-conference opponent Geneva College at the Adler Tennis Courts.
The Lions (8-1) held a senior day ceremony for Stricek, who went on to post wins in both singles and doubles play. Penn State Altoona earned the day's first point by winning two out of three in doubles, and the Lions proceeded to win four of six in singles play to defeat Geneva (4-5) and earn their eighth overall win of the season.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Caitlin Blessel (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys)/Stricek picked up their fourth win of the season together with a 6-2 victory over their opponents. Geneva won the No. 2 doubles match, but the pair of Lexi Colaianni (Pittsburgh, PA/Kiski Area)/Daniel Fulton (Milford, DE/Milford) clinched the doubles point for the Lions with a 6-3 triumph in the No. 3 match, the duo's seventh victory of the season together.
After that, Penn State Altoona won No. 2 through No. 5 in singles play to defeat the Golden Tornadoes by three points. Stricek earned her fourth win of the season after winning in a tiebreak, claiming a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 10-5 victory in the No. 2 singles match, followed by Colaianni's 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3, which improved her season record to 9-0. Sienna Fell (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) pulled out a tiebreak win in her No. 4 singles match, coming out on top 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 for her seventh victory of the season. Abigail Morgan (Orrville, OH/Orrville) prevailed 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot for her seventh win of the year.
Penn State Altoona women's tennis gets back at it tomorrow, Sunday, September 28, when the Lions hit the road to play Division II foe Lock Haven University at 1 p.m.
