Lions Cruise Past Bobcats for AMCC Semifinal Win

ERIE, Pa. – The No. 2 seed Penn State Altoona women's tennis team rolled to a 4-0 victory over No. 3 seed Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday evening in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinal-round match at Westwood Racquet Club.

Penn State Altoona (14-1) staked out a lead by the conclusion of doubles play, winning two out of three matches for the opening point. The Lions won No. 4 through No. 6 singles to end the overall match at decision and eliminate Pitt-Greensburg (4-7) from the conference tournament.

With its win, Penn State Altoona advances to the AMCC Championship match tomorrow, Sunday, October 19 at 1:30 p.m. against No. 1 seed Penn State Behrend.

The Bobcats prevailed in the No. 1 doubles match, but Penn State Altoona got wins in the other two spots to seize the match's first point. In No. 2 doubles, the duo of Sienna Fell (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan)/Abigail Morgan (Orrville, OH/Orrville) rattled off a 6-4 victory for their 10th win together this season, and the Lions won by forfeit in the No. 3 doubles spot to take a 1-0 lead into singles.

In singles, Penn State Altoona picked up three quick points to end the match in a 4-0 win over Pitt-Greensburg. Fell and Morgan each registered their 13th singles win of the season, tying for the most on the team, as Fell whitewashed her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 match and Morgan blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. The Bobcats yielded a point to Penn State Altoona by forfeit in the No. 6 match, and the Lions clinched the postseason victory.

Now, Penn State Altoona women's tennis will be in search of its third-ever AMCC title and its first since the 2002 season. A conference championship win tomorrow would also give the Lions their first-ever NCAA postseason appearance, as the title match winner receives the AMCC's automatic berth to compete in the Division III Tournament in the spring.
