Women’s Volleyball Falls to Oshkosh, Thiel in Saturday Action
SALISBURY, Md. – Penn State Altoona women's volleyball wrapped up its weekend in Salisbury University's Margie Knight Classic on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions suffered losses to the No. 6 University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Thiel College in the Maggs Center.
Penn State Altoona (0-3) was swept 3-0 by Oshkosh to start its day, then lost in straight sets, 3-0, again to Thiel in match two.
Match One: No. 6 UW-Oshkosh 3, Penn State Altoona 0
The Lions started Saturday's action with a three-set loss to nationally preseason-ranked UW-Oshkosh (2-0), which prevailed by scores of 25-16, 25-18, and 25-12.
Lia Simanski (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) led Penn State Altoona in kills with six, and Ella Hadley (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) totaled five points on four kills and a service ace to go along with seven digs. Jadeyn Price (Altoona, PA/Altoona) chipped in four points on four kills.
Julia Emel (Woodward, PA/Penns Valley) recorded team-highs in assists and digs, leading the Lions with seven assists and 12 digs.
Kyla Campbell (Altoona, PA/Great Commission) and Morgan Fussell (Blairsville, GA/Union County) each finished with two block assists.
Penn State Altoona trailed 6-4 early in the first set, until Oshkosh went on a 6-0 run to expand its lead to 12-4. Down 16-5, the Lions trimmed their deficit to seven, 18-11, helped by kills from Price and Hadley. A late kill from Simanski kept the difference at seven points, 23-16, but Oshkosh pulled out a 25-16 victory in the first set.
Aces from Hadley and Campbell, as well as kills from Hadley and Emel, got Penn State Altoona to a 4-2 lead early in the second set. Later, Fussell and Campbell teamed up on a block to make it 10-8, and an Oshkosh attack error kept the Lions' lead at two, 12-10. Penn State Altoona fell behind but was able to hang around, and Campbell's kill kept her team within two points, 20-18. But Oshkosh ended the set on a 5-0 run to come back for a 25-18 win.
In the third set, the Lions battled Oshkosh closely through the early stages. But, holding a 14-9 lead over Penn State Altoona, Oshkosh finished the set on an 11-3 run to clinch the sweep with a 25-12 victory.
Match Two: Thiel 3, Penn State Altoona 0
Penn State Altoona capped its weekend with a 3-0 loss to Thiel (1-2), as the Tomcats won the match by scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 25-22.
Simanski and Hadley tied for the team lead in points with 10 apiece, as Simanski scored 10 kills and Hadley had eight kills, two block assists, and a service ace. Campbell added 5.5 points on five kills and a block assist, while Makiya Mack (Philipsburg, PA/West Branch) had 4.5 points on two kills, two aces, and a block assist.
Emel put up 12 assists while serving up a pair of aces, and Brianna Woodring (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) notched a team-high 12 digs.
In the opening set, Thiel worked its way out to an eight-point lead, 13-5, but Penn State Altoona closed the gap to 17-15, thanks to a 10-4 run that included kills from Simanski, Hadley, and Campbell. Three straight Tomcat errors later in the set kept the Lions within two, 21-19, and back-to-back kills from Hadley and Simanski helped Penn State Altoona stay alive, 24-22. But Thiel scored the next point on a kill to win the set 25-22.
Thiel scored the first three points of the second set, but Penn State Altoona fought back to tie the score at 6-6. The teams exchanged runs, with the Tomcats scoring six in a row before the Lions answered with five straight points. Later, two Simanski kills, a Woodring ace, and an Emel kill put Penn State Altoona within one point, 19-18, of Thiel's lead. But the Tomcats did enough to keep their distance, and Thiel pulled out a 25-21 victory in the second set.
Thiel again established an early lead in the third, going up by advantages of 3-0 and 7-3. The Lions embarked on a 9-3 run to jump ahead, 12-10, and a Maggie Brewer (NuMine, PA/West Shamokin) kill set Penn State Altoona's lead at 15-14. After that, a Price kill, Mack and Hadley combo block, a kill from Campbell, and aces by Emel and Hadley helped keep the Lions on top, 21-19. But Thiel won six of the next seven points to rally for a 25-22 set win and hand Penn State Altoona a three-set loss.
Penn State Altoona women's volleyball returns to action on Friday, September 5, when the team hosts non-conference opponent Dickinson College for the Lions' home opener. Start time for the match is set for 7 p.m. in Adler Arena.
