Women’s Wrestling Gets Underway in ESU Open

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's wrestling started its 2025-26 season on the road Sunday in the ESU Open, hosted by East Stroudsburg University at the Koehler Fieldhouse.

For the Lions, Naomi Nachmias (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) wrestled in the 103 bracket, Richele Reyes (Buckingham, UK/Alconbury) competed at 124, Gianna Slusser (Raleigh, NC/Garner Magnet) was at 131, and Aliana Romero (Bridgeport, CT/Warren Harding) wrestled at 145.

Nachmias went up against Montreat College's Morgan Repasky in the first round of the 103 bracket, suffering a 4-0 loss by fall. After dropping to the consolation bracket, lost 12-1 by superiority to Lehigh University's Hattie Mack.

Reyes started her day with a strong win in the opening round of the 124 bracket, defeating Frostburg State University's Dayanah Savoy by superiority, 12-1, to advance to the round of 32. From there, Reyes notched her second victory of the day when she won by fall, 4-1, over York College's Barbara Ann Hartman. She continued her run of success in the round of 16, winning 8-5 by fall over Lehigh's Avery Hines. Reyes suffered her first loss of the day in the quarterfinals round, losing 2-0 by fall to Montreat's Alanna Garner. Her day came to an end in the consolation round of eight, where Reyes lost by fall to Sacred Heart University's Cailan Drake.

In the 131 bracket, Slusser lost 14-3 to Sacred Heart's Bella Sowards in the first round. After moving down to the consolation, she advanced to the next round with a victory by injury over East Stroudsburg's Cadence Howard. Slusser kept moving forward in the consolation round of 16, earning a 14-4 victory by superiority over Lincoln Memorial's Sophia Walls, then proceeded to post a 7-3 win by points against Frostburg's Nadia Ungurean. Next, Slusser rattled off a 7-2 win by points over Bluefield State University's Emma Flannagan to move to the consolation round of four. Her day came to an end against Gannon University's Joelle Scott, who recorded an 11-0 victory by superiority over Slusser.

Romero got a bye in the opening round of the 145 bracket, then took a fall to the University of Bridgeport's Idalia Lopez-Portuguez, 6-1. In the round of 16 in the consolation bracket, she lost 10-0 by superiority to East Stroudsburg's Selina Moore.

Penn State Altoona women's wrestling returns to the road for its next event, as the Lions will compete in their first dual meet of the season on Friday, November 7 at 6 p.m. at non-conference foe Waynesburg University.
