Women's Wrestling Gets First Program Victory in AMCC Duals

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's wrestling team hosted all of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference teams for AMCC Duals on Saturday afternoon, when they placed fifth.  

In the duals, Elmira College placed first, John Carroll University placed second, Hiram placed third, Alfred State placed fourth, Penn State Altoona placed fifth, and Buffalo State finished in sixth place. 

During the competition, Penn State Altoona women's wrestling got the first victory in the history of the program when they defeated Buffalo State 27-12. 

The Lions' day was also highlighted by Gianna Slusser (Raleigh, NC/Garner Magnet) going 5-0 in the tournament. 

For the Lions, Naomi Nachmias (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) wrestled at 103 and 110, Richele Reyes (Buckingham, UK/Alconbury) competed at 124, Slusser was at 131, and Aliana Romero (Bridgeport, CT/Warren Harding) wrestled at 145 and 160. 

Penn State Altoona vs John Carroll:  38-11 Loss 

In the 103 matchup, Nachmias lost 3-1 as Taylor MacAdam got the victory by points for the Blue Streaks.  

After two forfeits by the Lions, the Blue Streaks led 13-1. Reyes dominated in the 124 class, getting a victory by fall at 4:20.  

Following Reyes, Slusser got a victory by fall as well to bring the score to 13-11.  

John Carroll would then get a victory by fall and four forfeits to close out the score at 38-11.  

Penn State Altoona vs Hiram: 30-14 Loss 

Nachmias put points on the board early for the Lions, getting a victory by forfeit to make it 5-0 in favor of Penn State Altoona.  

The Terriers would then flip the dual, getting two victories by forfeit to take a 10-5 lead. 

The Lions remained in the dual though, with Reyes getting a victory by superiority at 1:10 to add four points for Penn State Altoona. 

Slusser got a victory by forfeit in the 131-weight class to give the Lions a 14-10 lead.  

Unfortunately for the Lions, the Terriers would get four more victories by forfeit to win the dual 30-14.  

Penn State Altoona vs Buffalo State: 27-12 Victory 

The Lions got a victory by forfeit to take an early 5-0 lead against the Benegals.  

Penn State Altoona would get another victory within the dual as Nachmias got a victory by superiority (technical fall) at 4:49 to add a further four points to the Lions' score. 

Buffalo State would cut the Lions' lead to three after getting a victory by forfeit.  

The Lions responded with a victory by forfeit of their own in the 124 class.  

Slusser would get her third victory of the day as she beat Rosaliz Aponte 3-1 in a victory by points.  

Penn State Altoona got two more victories by forfeit in the 145 and 160-weight classes to make it 27-7. Buffalo State got a victory by forfeit in the 207-weight class to end the dual and give Penn State Altoona the first win in program history. 

Penn State Altoona vs Elmira: 38-6 Loss 

The Lions got off to a rough start against the Soaring Eagles. In the 103 class, Nachmias lost in a victory by points to Joyce Rodriguez Santina.  

The Soaring Eagles would get a victory by forfeit in the 117-weight class to make it 8-1.  

Reyes then suffered her first loss in the tournament, losing in a victory by superiority (technical fall) against Megan Edwards.  

In the 131 class, Slusser got her fourth victory of the tournament, winning by superiority (technical fall) to make it 13-6. 

Elmira got two more victories by forfeit to extend their lead to 23-6. 

In the 160 class, Romero lost in a victory by fall against Talia Robles.  

The matchup would be rounded out with two more victories by forfeit for Elmira.  

Penn State Altoona vs Alfred State: 30-15 Loss 

The matchup between the Lions and Pioneers began with victories by forfeit being exchanged, as Nachmias would get a victory by forfeit in the 103 class and Alfred State would get a victory by forfeit in the 117 class.  

Reyes suffered another loss in the 124 class as Alfred State's Dianna Pineda got a victory by fall at 0:58.  

Slusser would get the Lions' second victory in the matchup, getting the victory by fall at 1:42 to put five points on the board for the Lions. 

Alfred State would get a further two victories by forfeit to extend their lead to ten.  

In the 160 class, Romero completely flipped the matchup. After losing 6-2 in the beginning of the contest, Romero got the fall at 1:34 to make it 20-15.  

Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Lions got, with Alfred State getting two more victories by forfeit to win the round 30-15.  

Next up for Penn State Altoona women's wrestling is a trip to West Virginia to face Bethany College on Thursday, December 11 at 6:00 p.m. The last time the Lions faced Bethany, the Bison got a 39-10 victory.
