Women's Wrestling Competes in Golden Wolves Open

READING, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's wrestling team competed in their final competition of 2025 as they battled in the Golden Wolves Open, hosted by Alvernia University.

For the Lions, Naomi Nachmias (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) wrestled in the 103 bracket, Richele Reyes (Buckingham, UK/Alconbury) competed at 124, and Gianna Slusser (Raleigh, NC/Garner Magnet) was at 131.  

All three of the Lions' wrestlers placed third in the consolation bracket.  

Nachmias went up against Marymount University's Nicole Barahona Rios in the quarterfinals of the 103 bracket, where she suffered a 10-0 loss. After dropping to the consolation bracket, Nachmias won by superiority in the semifinals, beating Kean University's Daphne Edwards. In the third-place match, Nachmias rematched Barahona Rios, beating her in a victory by fall in 2:33.  

Reyes began her day with a strong win in the round of 16 of the 124 bracket, defeating Kean's Nina Lojano by superiority, 10-0. Reyes would get another 10-0 victory by superiority in the quarterfinals, this time against Emmanuel College's Rebecca Royer. Unfortunately, Reyes' undefeated run came to an end in the semifinals as she lost 7-8 against D'Youville University's Alexis Brua. In the semifinals of the consolation bracket, Reyes got her second victory against Lojano, beating her by superiority, 10-0. Reyes moved on to the third-place match, where she beat Alvernia's Alana Durham 10-0 in her fourth victory by superiority of the tournament. 

In the 131 bracket, Slusser opened her tournament day with a 10-4 victory against Marymount's Ainsley Mate. Slusser moved on to the quarterfinals, where she beat Emmanuel's Logan Murray by fall in 4:45. Unfortunately, Slusser's unbeaten run would end in a 12-6 loss against D'Youville's Madison Wellen. In the consolation bracket, Slusser rematched Mate, winning the rematch 8-2. Slusser got an 8-6 victory against the University of Maryland's Mckinley Jovanovic, ensuring the Lions went 3-for-3 in third-place matches.  

In the team leaderboard, Penn State Altoona finished sixth out of the 12 universities competing, racking up six points through their three third-place finishes.  

Felician University finished first in the team rankings with 25 points, D'Youville University finished second with 24 points, and Wilkes University finished third with 16 points.  

The next time Penn State Altoona women's wrestling will compete is 2026, as they host Pitt Johnstown on Wednesday, January 7. The dual is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
