Women's Wrestling Competes in PA Collegiate Championships
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's wrestling team competed in the Pennsylvania Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships Saturday afternoon, hosted by East Stroudsburg University.
For the Lions, Naomi Nachmias (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) wrestled in the 103 bracket, Richele Reyes (Buckingham, UK/Alconbury) competed at 124, and Gianna Slusser (Raleigh, NC/Garner Magnet) was at 131.
In the quarterfinals of the 103 bracket, Nachmias competed against Misericordia University's Penelope Gomlak, who she defeated via fall at 1:49 (8-0) to move onto the semifinals. In the semifinals, Nachmias lost to East Stroudsburg's Olivia Klein by fall at 1:35 (9-0). In the consolation bracket, Nachmias had a bye in the semifinals, before competing against Lock Haven's Summer Batts. Nachmias lost by fall at 5:42 to Batts to finish fourth place in the consolation bracket.
Reyes had a bye in the round of 16 in the 124 bracket. In the quarterfinals of the bracket, Reyes won via forfeit against Leigh University's Leila Sidhu to move onto the semifinals. In the semifinals, Reyes lost by points to Pitt Johnstown's Isabel Alvarez 12-6. Competing in the consolation bracket, Reyes faced East Stroudsburg's Olivia Palmer, losing 10-0. In the bout for fifth place, Reyes was edged by Ursinus's Kloi Tighe 8-7, finishing in sixth place.
Slusser started the tournament off with a bye in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Slusser defeated Lock Haven's Rachel Plata 8-2 in a victory by fall at 3:50 to move onto the semifinals. In the semifinals, Slusser faced East Stroudsburg's Gianna Amendola, losing 10-0. Slusser forfeited by injury in the next two bouts to finish in sixth place.
Up next, Women's wrestling will compete in the JCU Open on Sunday, February 1, at the DeCarlo Varsity Center. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
