Women's Wrestling Competes in NCAA Region 2 Championships
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The Penn State Altoona women's wrestling team began competing in the NCAA Women's Wrestling Regional #2 Championships Friday morning, hosted by West Liberty University.
The Lions scored 12.5 points throughout the first day of the tournament to place 13th out of 17 teams.
For the Lions, Naomi Nachmias (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) wrestled in the 103 bracket, Richele Reyes (Buckingham, UK/Alconbury) competed at 124, and Gianna Slusser (Raleigh, NC/Garner Magnet) was at 131.
Nachmias's tournament started in the Championship Round 1, where she faced West Liberty's Jeulenea Khang, losing to Khang by fall at 3:30. With the loss, Nachmias moved into the consolation bracket, getting a bye in the first round. In round 2, Nachmias defeated Bethany College's Ava Paul by technical fall, 10-0, at 5:03. Tomorrow Nachmias will face off against Arcadia University's Samantha Larkin.
In the championship round 1, Reyes faced Bethany's Natalie Rodriguez, pinning Rodriguez at 2:27 to move to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Reyes lost to Lock Haven University's Jayleah Pletz by fall at 3:34. With the loss, Reyes moved to the consolation bracket. In consolation round 2, Reyes defeated York College of Pennsylvania's Kallie Bower by technical fall, 10-0, at 2:40. Tomorrow Reyes will face Pitt Johnstown's Isabel Alvarez.
In the 131-class, Slusser competed in championship round 1, defeating Delaware Valley University's Eva Herrera by technical fall, 11-0, at 3:24. In the quarterfinals, Slusser lost to Lehigh University's Aubre Krazer by technical fall, 10-0, at 1:32. In consolation round 2, Slusser pinned York's Barbara Hartman at 1:11. Tomorrow Slusser will compete against East Stroudsburg University's Gianna Amendola.
The Penn State Altoona women's wrestling team will compete in the consolation rounds of the NCAA Women's Wrestling Championships tomorrow. Day two of the tournament will begin at 11:00 a.m.
