Men's Swimming Rises to Fourth in Day Two of Malone Invite
CANTON, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's swimming team rose to fourth place out of 13 teams through two days of the Malone University Invitational, which wrapped up its second finals session of the event on Friday night in the Branin Natatorium.
The Lions gained 319 points in Friday's finals, boosting their team score to 521 points through two days. Division II Gannon University ranked atop the team leaderboard with 1,324.50 points, while Oberlin College was in second place with 772.
During the day's competition, the team of Caden Traggiai (Saxonburg, PA/Knoch), Adam Dotts (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), Pedro Teran (Allentown, PA/Parkland), and Shuo Sun (Falls Church, VA/China High Schools) had a time of 7:09.80 in the 800 Yard Freestyle, breaking the previous record of 7:12.59 set on February 14, 2024, by Traggiai, Adam Marawan, Jack Zisa, and Adam Dotts during the AMCC Championships. With this time, they placed fourth overall in the 'A' finals.
The team of Liam Fass (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley), Nick Trabucco (Carlisle, PA/Boiling Springs), Jackson Ketterling (Bismarck, ND/Bismarck), and Ben Dotts (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) competed in the 'B' finals of the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, finishing with a time of 7:38.43 to finish in 11th place overall.
The Lions had two teams competing in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. The team of Teran, Adam Dotts, Ben Dotts, and Gabe Krizel (Allentown, PA/Parkland) competed in the 'A' finals, clocking in at 1:38.53 to finish in seventh place. The team of Jonathan Bandy (Saint Marys, PA/Saint Marys), Brian Nguyen (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township), Fass, and Trabucco competed in the 'B' finals, finishing with a time of 1:44.22 to finish in 14th place overall.
Teran followed up his role in the record-breaking relay performance by competing in the 'B' finals of the 200 Yard Freestyle, finishing in tenth place with a time of 1:45.97. Fass competed in the 'C' finals of the 200 Yard Freestyle, finishing in 23rd place overall with a time of 1:54.09.
Traggiai, another member of the record-breaking team, competed in the 'A' finals of the 400 Yard IM, clocking in at 4:26.49 to finish in seventh place.
The Lions had a trio competing in the 100 Yard Butterfly, as Sun, Krizel, and Ben Dotts all competed in the 'B' finals of the event. Sun finished in 11th place with a time of 53.60, Ben Dotts finished in 12th place with a time of 53.80, and Krizel finished in 14th place with a time of 54.61.
The Lions also had a trio competing in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, as Ketterling, Nguyen, and Adam Dotts all competed in the 'B' finals of the event. Adam Dotts clocked a time of 1:01.64 to finish in 10th place, Ketterling clocked a time of 1:02.15 to finish in 13th place, and Nguyen clocked a time of 1:03.50 to finish in 16th place.
In the 100 Yard Backstroke, Krizel qualified for the 'A' finals, where he finished in seventh place with a time of 54.13.
Two Lions competed in the 'C' finals of the 100 Yard Backstroke. Trabucco clocked in at 58.12 to place 17th overall. Michael Williams (Lansford, PA/Panther Valley) clocked in at 1:06.44 to place 22nd overall.
The Lions will head into the third and final day of the Malone Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, November 22. The round of preliminaries is set to start at 10 a.m., with the invitational's last finals session scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
