Men's Tennis Tops Celtics in Wednesday Doubleheader

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team competed in their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matches of the season Wednesday afternoon when they defeated Carlow 7-0 and 6-1 in a home doubleheader at Gorilla House Gym.  

Match One: Penn State Altoona 7, Carlow 0 

In the first match of the doubleheader, Penn State Altoona (4-3, 2-0 AMCC) got on the scoresheet early after sweeping in doubles play. The Lions won six of six in singles play to post a seven-point match victory over Carlow (0-3, 0-2 AMCC). 

In the win, Kody Cessna (Apollo, PA/Kiski Area) got his first collegiate victory in singles.  

In No. 1 doubles, the team of Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) and Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) earned their third win together, winning their match 6-0. The duo of Ivan Bene (York, PA/Lancaster Country Day) and Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) defeated their opponents 6-0 in No. 2 doubles. The Lions picked up their third win in No. 3 doubles as Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) and Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) won 6-1.  

Beard got two 6-0 victories in No. 1 singles. Bene also got two 6-0 victories in No. 2 singles to get his third win of the season. Lopez got the team's third set of 6-0 victories to defeat his opponent in No. 3 singles. In No. 4 singles, Newell emerged victorious, winning 6-0, 6-3. Hibbs got his third victory of the season after defeating his opponent 6-0, 6-1. Rounding out the match in No. 6 singles was Cessna, who was victorious 6-1, 6-2.  

Match Two: Penn State Altoona 6, Carlow 1 

In the second match of the doubleheader, the Lions won all three doubles and won five of six in singles to pick up their second AMCC victory. 

In the win, Stephen Sanders (Johnstown, PA/Bishop McCort) got his first collegiate singles victory. 

Beard and Lopez got the victory in No. 1 doubles, defeating their opponents 6-1. In No. 2 doubles, Grot and Bene got their fourth victory, winning 6-0. Hibbs and Cessna got their first victory together in No. 3 doubles, winning 6-0.  

The Lions continued to win in singles play. In No. 1 singles, Beard won 6-0, 6-0 to get his fifth victory this season. Bene picked up his fourth victory of the season after winning 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Newell got his fifth victory following his 6-0, 6-0 set wins. Grot got his fourth win after winning in No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2. In No. 5 singles, Sanders defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-4.  

Up next, the Penn State Altoona men's tennis team will begin a three-match away stretch, the first of which will be on Tuesday, March 17, against Waynesburg at 4:00 p.m.
