Lions Blank Bobcats in Doubleheader

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team's schedule returned home today with the Lions defeating Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt Greensburg 7-0 in both matches of a doubleheader at the Adler Tennis Courts.

With his two victories in doubles, senior Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) became the Lions' all-time doubles wins leader today. He has 40 doubles wins and passed former Lions Casey Hess (2021-25) and his previous record total of 38 doubles wins.  

Match One: Penn State Altoona 7, Pitt Greensburg 0   

In the first match of the doubleheader, Penn State Altoona (7-4, 4-1 AMCC) got on the scoresheet early after sweeping in doubles play. The Lions won six of six in singles to post a seven-point match victory over Pitt Greensburg (2-10, 1-4 AMCC).   

In No. 1 doubles, record breaker Beard and Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) got their sixth win together, winning their match 6-0. Ivan Bene (York, PA/Lancaster Country Day) and Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) notched their fourth win after winning 6-4 in the No. 2 slot. The Lions picked up their third win in No. 3 doubles as Kody Cessna (Apollo, PA/Kiski Area) and Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) won 6-0 for their first win together.  

The wins continued in singles play. Beard won 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot for his eighth victory. In the No. 2 matchup, Lopez prevailed over his opponent 7-5, 6-2 to notch his fifth win this season. Newell won both sets 6-1 in the No. 3 clash for his seventh win of this year's campaign. In No. 4 singles, Grot defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-1 for his fifth win. Cessna got his second win after defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 5 match. Rounding out singles was Stephen Sanders (Johnstown, PA/Bishop McCort), who won 6-3, 6-2 for his second victory.  

Match Two: Penn State Altoona 7, Pitt Greensburg 0   

In the second match of the home doubleheader, the Lions won all three doubles and won all six in singles to pick up their fourth AMCC victory.   

In No. 1 doubles, Beard and Grot got their first victory together, winning 6-0. Newell and Cessna got the victory in the No. 2 spot, defeating their opponents 6-4. The No. 3 slot had a first win together for Jude Irwin (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) and Sanders, and they triumphed 6-1.  

In No. 1 singles, Beard won his sets 6-1, 6-0. Lopez won both of his sets 6-1 in the No. 2 matchup. In the No. 3 match, Newell won 6-1, 6-2. Grot got the win in No. 4 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2. In No. 5 singles, Cessna won his sets 6-2, 6-0. Rounding out the match was Sanders, who won his match 6-4, 6-0.  

Penn State Altoona men's tennis plays on the road for their next match, a non-conference clash against Waynesburg tomorrow, Monday, March 30, at 7:00 p.m.
