Lions Best Waynesburg 6-1

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team traveled for the final time in the 2025-26 regular season, defeating Waynesburg 6-1 at the Bechtle Tennis Facility.  

Penn State Altoona (8-4, 4-1 AMCC) got ahead early in the match after defeating Waynesburg (2-5) in all three doubles matches. The Lions then won five of six in singles to get the five-point match victory.  

Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) and Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) got the ball rolling in No. 1 doubles, defeating their opponents 6-0 for their seventh win together. In the No. 2 spot, duo Ivan Bene (York, PA/Lancaster Country Day) and Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) got their fifth win of the season after winning 6-1. Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) and Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) wrapped up doubles with a 6-3 win in No. 3 doubles, notching their third win together in the process.  

The wins continued in singles. Beard tallied his tenth victory of the season following his 6-4, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles. In No. 3 singles, Lopez won 6-4, 6-3 for his seventh victory. In the No. 4 match, Newell prevailed over his opponent with set scores of 6-3, 6-3. Hibbs and Grot also got wins in singles play, as Hibbs recorded a 6-1, 6-1 triumph in the No. 5 match and Grot had a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6. The win would be Hibbs' fifth and Grot's seventh of the season.  

Up next, Penn State Altoona men's tennis will compete against local AMCC rival Mount Aloysius in a home doubleheader on Wednesday, April 1, starting at 4:30 p.m. That day, Penn State Altoona men's tennis will honor seniors Beard and Hibbs for their contributions to the program.
