Lions Top Warriors 6-1

ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona men's tennis competed in their final regular season game Thursday evening, defeating non-conference opponent Lycoming College 6-1 at the Adler Tennis Courts.

Penn State Altoona (11-5) got ahead early after defeating Lycoming (3-9) in all three doubles matches. The Lions added to their lead in singles, winning five of six to achieve a five-point match victory.  

In No. 1 doubles, duo of Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) and Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) recorded their ninth victory together, a 6-3 win over their opponents. In the No. 2 slot, the team of Ivan Bene (York, PA/Lancaster Country Day) and Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) won 6-3 for their eighth win together. Kody Cessna (Apollo, PA/Kiski Area) and Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) earned their second victory together after winning 6-1 in No. 3 doubles.

The Lions continued to earn points, winning five of six singles.  

Beard earned a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 1 singles match, his 13th win of the season. In the No. 3 spot, Lopez battled for a 7-5, 6-2 win, achieving his tenth win of the season. Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) accomplished his 13th win following his 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 4 slot. Hibbs recorded his eighth victory, a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 5 match. Grot blanked his opponent, 6-0, 6-0 in the No.6 match to record his ninth win.  

Up next, the Penn State Altoona men's tennis team will compete in the semifinals of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference's men's tennis tournament Saturday, April 18, against No. 3 seeded Mount Aloysius College. The match is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
