Men's Tennis Sweeps Mount Aloysius, Advances to AMCC Title Match

ERIE, Pa. - The No. 2 seed Penn State Altoona men's tennis team punched its ticket to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Division Championship match on Saturday evening, when the Lions earned a 4-0 victory over No. 3 seed Mount Aloysius in a semifinal-round match at the Westwood Racquet Club.

With its victory, Penn State Altoona (12-5) will face No. 1 seed Penn State Behrend for the AMCC Championship tomorrow, Sunday, April 18, at 1:30 p.m. in Erie. The winner of that match moves on to play the Atlantic East conference champion on Sunday, May 3, for the joint AMCC-Atlantic East championship.

The Lions put together a dominant win over Mount Aloysius (4-7) in Saturday's AMCC semifinal contest, as Penn State Altoona did not lose a set on the day.

Penn State Altoona got the first match point following their victories in doubles. In No. 2 doubles, Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone)/Ivan Bene (York, PA/Lancaster Country Day) defeated their opponents 6-1 for their ninth win together. The Lions got their second point of doubles by walkover in the No. 3 match. Since AMCC playoffs are played to decision, the doubles ended after Penn State Altoona won two doubles matches.

The Lions dominated in singles, getting three wins to close out the match with a 4-0 victory.

The first point came courtesy of a walkover in the No. 6 match. Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 match for his 14th win. Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) clinched the match victory with his 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 3 singles. The win is Lopez's 11th of the season.

Now, Penn State Altoona men's tennis will play in the AMCC Championship match for the fifth year in a row. The Lions are in search of their seventh-ever conference title and first since 2006.
