Lions Defeat D’Youville, Medaille in Saturday AMCC Action

Springfield, Ohio – Penn State Altoona men's volleyball picked up a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference wins on Saturday afternoon at Wittenberg University, when the Lions defeated D'Youville College 3-0 and Medaille College 3-1.

Penn State Altoona (13-14, 5-8 AMCC) snapped a brief, two-match skid with back-to-back strong showings against their AMCC counterparts.

Match One: Penn State Altoona 3, D'Youville 0

The Lions used a balanced performance to defeat D'Youville (6-18, 3-9 AMCC) in three sets, winning by scores of 25-22, 25-18, and 25-19.

Dan Downs (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) led Penn State Altoona in kills and blocks, finishing the match with nine kills and three solo blocks while also posting five digs. Frank Perehinec (Altoona, PA/Altoona) had seven kills and a solo block.

Ben Beaver (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) tied the match-high for assists with 21, and he also had seven digs, five kills, and one solo block. Kyle Whiteman (Northampton, PA/Northampton) added 10 assists.

Jon Ramsey (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) had a match-high nine digs to go along with five kills. Tyler Chan (Framingham, MA/Framingham) posted eight digs, and Brian Sheddy (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) tallied six digs while recording five kills.

Match Two: Penn State Altoona 3, Medaille 1

The Lions took care of Medaille (8-16, 4-9 AMCC) in four sets. Penn State Altoona won the opening set 25-21, but the Mavericks countered with a 26-24 win in the second set. However, the Lions posted 25-17 and 25-23 victories in the next two sets.

Downs again led his team in kills and blocks, putting up 12 kills, three solo blocks, and two block assists. Meanwhile, Ramsey recorded season-highs by totaling 11 kills and 10 digs.

Sheddy contributed 10 kills and seven digs, and Perehinec had five kills, two block assists, and one solo block. Daniel Jordan (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) chipped in two kills and two solo blocks, and Mirko Pandini (Greensburg, PA/Greater Latrobe) accounted for one block assist.

Beaver again tied for the match-high in assists, finishing with 23 assists while adding six kills, six digs, two solo blocks, and one block assist. Whiteman was second on the squad in assists, compiling 21.

Chan led all players in the match with 16 digs. Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) tied the match-high in service aces with three while adding three digs.

Penn State Altoona men's volleyball finishes its regular season schedule tomorrow, Sunday, April 7, when the Lions will play AMCC foe Wittenberg University at 12:00 p.m.
