Late Goals Help Women’s Soccer Claw Back for Tie
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Facing a 3-1 deficit in the second half of Friday evening's 2025 season opener at Kris's Meadow, the Penn State Altoona women's soccer team bagged two goals late in the period to battle back and finish with a tie, 3-3, against non-conference foe Wilson College.
Trailing 3-1 to Wilson (0-0-1) in the latter stages of the second half, Alexa Adiarte (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) found the back of the net in the 78th minute to trim Penn State Altoona's (0-0-1) deficit to one. Taylor Frederick (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) came up with the game-tying goal on a penalty kick in the 81st minute, and the Lions salvaged a draw in their first game of the season.
Jordan Yaletsko (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Academy Charter) scored a first-half goal for Penn State Altoona, and Mya Torres (Culpeper, VA/Culpeper County) made 11 saves at goalkeeper in her Lions debut.
Wilson stormed out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half, thanks to two Halley Shaffer goals in the game's first 9:19.
Penn State Altoona got on the board at 14:27, when Yaletsko scored to make it 2-1, getting an assist from Kylei Martin (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg).
But the Phoenix got that goal back just over six minutes later, when Reilly Ryan's tally at the 20:33 mark boosted Wilson's lead back to two, 3-1. The home team maintained its two-goal advantage through the first 45 and took its lead into halftime.
Wilson held its 3-1 lead for most of the second half, until Penn State Altoona struck for two goals to knot the score late in the period.
Adiarte's first collegiate goal came at 77:29, making it 3-2. Kira Trexler (Martinsburg, PA/Central) picked up the assist on the play, representing her first college point. Just under three minutes later, a foul in the box set Frederick up with a penalty kick attempt, and she converted to even the score at 3-3 at the 80:23 mark.
Each team pulled the trigger on several shots during the closing minutes of the game, but the Lions and Phoenix ultimately settled for a 3-3 tie.
Yaletsko finished the contest with a team-best four shot attempts, while Frederick led the team with two shots on goal.
Penn State Altoona women's soccer has a quick turnaround, returning to campus for its home opener tomorrow, Saturday, August 30, when the Lions host non-conference opponent Cedar Crest College. Start time at Spring Run Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m.
