Lions Lose Tight Game Against Bearcats
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's soccer team faced non-conference opponent Saint Vincent at Spring Run Stadium on Wednesday, where they suffered a 2-1 loss against the Bearcats.
Saint Vincent (5-1) would make it 1-0 in the 17th minute as Cameron Mulvanny would set up Daniel Maddock to score. Five minutes later, Penn State Altoona (0-5) would equalize as Felipe Velarde (Panama/Colegio Real de Panama) would poke through a pass to Matias Harte (State College, PA/State College), who would put the ball in the back of the net.
The two sides would head to the halftime break tied 1-1. In the second half, the game would open up more offensively, with both teams having golden opportunities to score. Velarde would force a save from goalkeeper Kameron Rock before hitting the crossbar with his follow-up shot. For Saint Vincent, Daniel Maddock would rattle the post before Jack Billick would hit the woodwork again for the Bearcats in the 81st minute.
Unfortunately for the Lions, goalkeeper Alejandro Monjarretz (Managua, Nicaragua / St. Augustine Preparatory School) and the woodwork could not deny the Bearcats forever as Cameron Mulvanny would score the game winner in the 83rd minute.
Saint Vincent would hold on for the final seven minutes to get their fifth victory of the season.
Monjarretz would start between the sticks for the Lions and would make nine saves over the course of the 90. Harte and Velarde would have three and one shots on goal respectively for the Lions. Collin Murphy (State College, PA/State College) would chip in with two shots on goal, while Niko Ferrales (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ / Northern Highlands Regional) and Leo Galleta (Kings Park, NY / Smithtown West) would each have one shot on goal.
