Softball Splits Thursday Games with Valley Forge, Albion
LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – Penn State Altoona softball played two more games on Thursday in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, defeating the University of Valley Forge before losing to Albion College at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
Penn State Altoona (7-5) started its day with a 7-1 victory over Valley Forge before getting blanked, 7-0, by Albion College in game two.
Game One: Penn State Altoona 7, Valley Forge 1
The Lions began Thursday's slate of games with a dominant victory over Valley Forge (0-5), allowing just one run while scoring seven of their own on 11 hits.
Allison Beeman (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone), Madison Kennedy (Williamsburg, PA/Central), Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights), and Gracie Wilt (Altoona, PA/Altoona) each had a two-hit game for Penn State Altoona.
Beeman was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, and Kennedy went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Storm was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, a run, and a walk, and Wilt went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two stolen bases, and one RBI.
In the circle, Riley Best (Coalport, PA/Glendale) tossed a complete game, punching out 11 batters across seven innings of work to notch her third win of the season. Best also helped her own cause by driving in a pair of runs.
Penn State Altoona scored the day's first runs in the bottom of the second, as RBI singles from Beeman and Kendal Wadsworth (Johnstown, PA/Richland) put the Lions on top. Penn State Altoona doubled its lead in the third, as Wilt contributed an RBI single and later scored on an error to make it 4-0.
The Patriots got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth, but Penn State Altoona got it back in the next half-inning, thanks to Best's RBI single.
The Lions added a run in the fifth on another Beeman RBI single, and Best's sacrifice brought home Storm in the sixth to make it 7-1.
Game Two: Albion 7, Penn State Altoona 0
The Lions' fortunes turned in their second game of the day, when Albion (5-2) shut out Penn State Altoona and limited them to just five hits.
Kara Lansberry (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg Community) had two of the Lions' five hits with a 2-for-2 showing at the plate. Lauren Davidson (Clearfield, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) had a hit and a walk, and Alexa Baney (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) and Storm also had one hit apiece.
Josselyn Nau (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) made the start at pitcher, going six innings, striking out two batters, and taking the loss. Wadsworth finished the game off by tossing the seventh.
The Brits made it 1-0 in the top of the second on a Kiersten Wilkin RBI single, and a Jessie Anstandig run-scoring groundout and Allie Trantham RBI single increased Albion's lead to 3-0.
Albion increased its advantage to 4-0 in the sixth inning, when Wilkin doubled and later scored on a Kayla Cole groundout. In the seventh, Lilly Zaskowski hit an RBI single to left, Anstandig scored on a Trantham grounder, and Sophia Shingles came home on a wild pitch to put the Brits up 7-0.
Penn State Altoona softball's final day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic is tomorrow, Friday, March 13, at the North Myrtle Complex. The Lions face Cedar Crest College at 9 a.m. before finishing off with Bridgewater State University at 11 a.m.
