Softball Loses in Day Two of AMCC Tournament

DUBOIS. Pa. - The No. 2 seed Penn State Altoona softball team competed on day two of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship tournament on Thursday, getting upset by No. 6 seed Mount Aloysius at Rose & Dennis Heindl Memorial Field.

Penn State Altoona (22-14) dropped into the losers bracket following its first game of the tournament after losing 4-0 to Mount Aloysius (14-23).

Much of the game was scoreless, with both teams holding each other to few hits. The Mounties broke through in the top of the sixth inning, scoring a run before adding three more in the top of the seventh.

Olivia Werkheiser (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) hit a perfect 3-for-3, while Kendal Wadsworth (Johnstown, PA/Richland) was 1-for-3 with a double.

At pitcher, Josselyn Nau (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) was saddled with the loss in a complete game effort. Over seven innings, the right-hander yielded zero walks and four runs.

The outfield kept the beginning of the game scoreless. Throughout the first five innings, Mount Aloysius had three hits, and Penn State Altoona had four.

In the top of the sixth inning, things started to change. Ava Doyle hit a home run for the Mounties to put the first run of the game on the board. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lions would be unable to put up any runs or any hits as the Mounties went into the top of the seventh inning with a one-run lead.

A single from Aislinn Myers led to Maggie Cypher scoring another run for Mount Aloysius. The Mounties would add two more runs from a Hanna Stedman double.

The Lions got players on base in the bottom of the seventh, with Wadsworth reaching first on an error by the Mounties and Werkheiser hitting a single. Unfortunately, it would not be enough for Penn State Altoona, as Mount Aloysius held on for a four-run victory.

Now, Penn State Altoona will face No. 4 seed Pitt-Bradford tomorrow, Friday, May 8, at 2 p.m. Because of the loss today, the Lions must win tomorrow in order to remain in the AMCC Tournament.
